Snow Leopards are among the most elusive animals in the world. They blend into their surroundings so well, the local people sometimes refer to them as shape-changing mountain spirits. This elusiveness also makes them difficult to study in their natural habitat. Snow leopards live in such a harsh climate and harsh terrain, they need their heavy coat for warmth and their long tail for balance while climbing the steep cliffs of the region. The snow leopard’s paws are also very furry, both for warmth, and for added cushioning and traction while scaling the steep slopes.

Conservation Concerns:

Local people have hunted the snow leopard for its coat and bones to be used in traditional Asian medicines. They are also killed for attacking herder’s livestock. Work is being done to establish international protection of the leopard’s habitat and protection for the cat itself. Humanitarian work is also being done to improve the quality of life for the local people so they won’t be so devastated if a snow leopard attacks an animal in their herd.
